Although this post doesn't have much to do with being 'green', i thought the info was important. When the recent fires hit SD, we got out of town in a hurry. That Monday, we made a decision to leave and were on the road within 40 mins. After a crazy drive, we finally got to Palm Springs and stayed there for the week.
One thing that I learned from the experience is that we were drastically under-prepaired to leave and did a lot of last minute scrambling and luckily it worked out. Getting 1 2 yr old, 2 big dogs, and 3 adults in 2 seperate cars was quite the adventure.
Here's what I learned and what we'll do going forward:
1. Always have cash in the house somewhere.
2. Try to always have a near full tank of gas. When I went to get water on that Monday morning the wait for gas was about 1/2 hr. Luckily, my wife and I both had full tanks of gas so we were ok.
3. Keep 5-10 gallons of water stored somewhere, ready to go.
4. Keep an emergency list handy. To me, this is one of the biggest things. We scrambled so much and left in such a hurry we forgot a lot of stuff. We're compiling a list so that if we ever need to leave that fast again, we'll at least have a list of things we need and can run around the house and grab them. see a partial list of ours below.
5. Leave a key somewhere outside. We needed to have 1 of our friends get into our place and he ended up going through the doggie door in the garage. Would have been much easier if we had a key hidden somewhere outside.
6. bring a laptop. it sounds crazy but our laptop kept us more up to date than anything on the news for the whole week. There were people blogging up to the minute info that we would have never gotten if we were just watching the news.
our emergency list (in no order):
road atlas, cash, id's/passports, wedding album, baby book, 2 sets of clothes for everyone, diapers, dogfood, water, utility knife/leatherman thing, sleeping bag, external harddrive with all of our pictures, laptop, cell phone chargers, my contacts (eyes), food bars, flashlight, portable cell phone charger.
that's it, hope this finds you safe and happy and hope this info helps..jim
